One of the comments I often receive from other women is – “I would love to go poking through your wardrobe, although I couldn’t fit one leg in your dresses.”
“Pint-sized.” “Pocket rocket.” “Tinkerbell.” Even the mortifying “Little Poppet”. I could go on… I get called names because of my petite stature (yes, it grows tiresome), and I know all the challenges of trying to get truly great fitting petite fashion.
So when I discover designers who rock petites, I take notice. It really should come as no surprise, but Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the former child stars best known for 1980s sitcom Full House, who have gone on to be fashionistas with their own brands – those girls have over the years smashed out some amazing petite fashion! The internet tells me their height respectively is as follows: Mary-Kate standing 1.55cm/5.1″ and Ashley at 1.58cm/5.2″. (I will have to get someone else to check this for me, but they might possibly both be slightly taller than yours truly.)
One of my casual vintage wardrobe staples is a pair of beautiful flares made by mary-kateandashley brand for Target, in a Misses’ Size 14. The line of clothing launched in Australia in 2002, when the Olsens were 16. The brand and Target received a lot of criticism for some of the clothes being “too adult” for children. Well, as it happens, their clothes fit in just beautifully into an adult petite wardrobe. If I ever find mary-kateandashley items in thrift stores, I snap them up! They are incredibly flattering and have charming details.
So there you have one of my petite fashion wardrobe secrets – even for new items, I sometimes shop the Misses’ Department for Size 14/Size 16, and often pay remarkably reasonable prices by doing so! Shopping in Misses’ Department doesn’t always work; it depends on the cut of the garment, as obviously hips and cleavage don’t always fit nicely into Misses’ line clothes. But these mary-kateandashley flares are some of the best fitting jeans I have ever owned. They are also just gorgeous, with beautiful embroidered and applique detail.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have long since moved on from the mary-kateandashley brand, and now operate a high end womenswear fashion brand The Row, producing elegant clothing, eyewear, and handbags. In 2012, The Council of Fashion Designers of America named Ashley and Mary-Kate as Womenswear Designers of The Year.
